Recording your sound

If you’re confident that your mixing is good enough to be heard by the masses it’s time to start recording demo mixes to hand out in person and upload to the internet for the world to hear. It’s easier than ever now to distribute your music around, you can just use the internet if you don’t fancy copying hundreds of CD’s to give away. Using sites like sound cloud, you send it, media fire and even buying your own web space to upload your promotional mixes is easy to do and the amount of downloads you can achieve are unbelievable. I wish this method had been around when I started out, it cost me a bomb to give out all those tapes.

Recording the mix

This can be done in various ways, using a computer with a good sound card that has a line in and a program like Sony Sound Forge and a CD writer on your computer so you can burn it to CD or you can stick to the old CD Writer that plugs directly from your DJ mixer the one I use is a Sony RDC W100. If your using a computer to record your mix make sure it’s pretty well quipped and has enough disc space (a gig or 2) to hold your mix until you get round to burning it and always keep it under 80 minutes in length so your fans can burn it to CD.

When it comes burning it to CD you just use the CD writer that’s built in to your computer, if you don’t want to burn it and just want to upload it all you need then is an internet connection and an account on the websites mentioned in my DJ Promotion Article.

I have always copied my own CD’s and Tapes but CD Duplication is available pretty cheap if you do a search on Google for CD Duplication Services. This can save you a lot of time if you’re thinking about doing them yourself and they usually have a graphic design and printing service for the covers and the product you get back is usually a professional CD all packaged and ready to distribute or sell in sharpish time too.
