Promoting yourself as a DJ

DJ Tips and Tricks

I get asked time and time again by DJ’s about breaking out of the bedroom and into nightclubs and making a name for themselves as a DJ. It is seen as impossible getting yourself known as a DJ as you need your name on flyers to get gigs but without the gigs you can’t get your name on flyers (catch 22).

My advice is simple; just get as many demo mixes out there as possible to get your name about. Try to start a monthly mixtape series with a catchy name and duplicate a set amount every month to hand out to family, friends and work colleagues as soon as they are finished.

When I started out as a DJ back in 1999 I was frustrated at how hard it was to get a booking in a nightclub but instead of wasting time I just created demo tapes regularly and handed them out to friends and friends of friends until they fell into the right hands and landed me a gig.
